The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum:
The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum is the official state railroad museum of Alabama. Dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and operation of historically significant railway equipment.
The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum features a wide range of locomotives, cars and other railroad equipment that dates from the 19th century to the 1950s and operates regularly scheduled excursions with museum equipment over the museum’s track. It also features two depots that are approximately 100 years old, including a privately owned dinner train.
The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum’s rolling stock and equipment collection contains pieces spanning the time period from as early as 1890 and as late as 2005. The collection contains ordinary pieces such as cabooses and flatcars along with unique pieces such as club cars, passenger coaches, a diner and a rare domed observation car. Along with our passenger and freight rosters, the Museum maintains and, in some cases, still uses maintenance-of-way cars including cranes, derricks, handcars, and a Velocipede.
Cars being used on our excursion rides are the only ones open to the public and then only during operating ours. Pieces not in service are not open to the public as they are undergoing restoration or function only as static display.
We hope you’ll visit us to ride a train, look at our museum collection, and learn more about Alabama’s railroad history. Please join us for our special events on each major holiday.
